Isolation and Characterizations of Phytoconstituents from Quisqualis indica Linn. (Combretaceae)

ABSTRACT:
Objectives: To isolate the phytoconstituents by column chromatography and characterization of phytoconstituents by using spectroscopic technique. Methods: The petroleum ether extract of leaves and flower of Quisqualis indica were studied for isolation of triterpenoids and methanolic extract for flavonoids and tannins by column chromatography and preparative-thin layer chromatography (P-TLC) and characterized by spectroscopic techniques (UV-visible spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry). Results: The Tannins (Gallic acid), flavonoid (Quercetin and Rutin) and Terpenoids (ß-sitosterol and Lupeol) were isolated from leaves and flowers of Quisqualis indica and identified with help of preliminary phytochemical methods, physical properties, spectroscopic data and Co-TLC with authentic standards. Conclusion: The isolation and characterization of compound A, B from petroleum extract and Compound C, D, E from methanolic extract of leaves and flower were the first ever to be reported from this plant the work was carried by means of various physical and spectral techniques.
